IT IS POSSIBLE TO PRESERVE THE PERIOD STYLE, USING MATERIALS OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY.

Specialized jobs require specialized materials.

More than a decade ago, our team had the opportunity to work on the internal restoration of a house built in 1850, with the condition of preserving the same style and material of the period. The house, located in Providence, Rhode Island, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. To this day the installed material remains intact.

The architecture and decoration of interior rooms in the 1800s underwent multiple changes in the nascent United States, allowing the consolidation of a classic style of its own. After the Revolution of the thirteen colonies, the English decorative influence predominated, however, the French and general European influence helped to shape what is known as the early Federal style. Circles, ellipses and octagons were introduced as recurring variations in the designs and particularly the free-standing staircase became a prominent feature of the entrance hall.

by this way, the four-story octagonal corner tower and umbrella roof of this large stone-faced house forcefully proclaims the Italian villa style of its structure. This William L. Bailey-designed house was built on an elevation on what was then the outskirts of Providence. The house is timber-framed and clad in smooth ashlar of regularly curving native stone, it is topped by gable roofs whose ridge line is constant. The first floor contains a long central hall with a spiral staircase that ascends on one side.

The intervention performed by our team was carried out throughout the house, the living rooms, dining room, bedrooms, bathrooms, stairs, and hallways were restored and covered with new papers. The level of detail and quality of the products demanded a millimetric adjustment, achieved with effort and patience.

The same care was taken when selecting materials, for example, Phillip Jeffries linen wallpaper ensures a mix of classic and casual textures, where woven natural linen fuses handcrafted beauty with the durability and technology offered by high-performance wall coverings. Also, Phillip Jeffries tweed wallpaper, a classic menswear-inspired textile with subtle texture, is the perfect match for linen wallpaper.

On the other hand, the house of Scalamandré is a benchmark for connoisseurs of fine design and all things beautiful especially when it comes to restoration related work. The house of Scalamandré is characterized by its strong commitment to the art and craftsmanship of luxury products that it makes available to the design community, maintaining the classic style but with a great vision towards the future.

Finally, GP & J Baker has taken some of its most beautiful and iconic designs and translated them into a magnificent collection of wall coverings, offering a color palette that ranges from light and subtle to the romanticism of glorious deeper tones. To its credit it has designs specifically created for wall coverings, classic, floral, geometric, in some cases reflecting Art Deco.

In this way, by making a correct selection of materials and with the right technique for the handling of these unique pieces, an adequate and lasting restoration is guaranteed with the best standards, which harmonize with the furniture elements and with the works of art that stand out when walking through the corridors of the house, where painters of the stature of Joos Van Clave enliven the tour.
